Capcom removing Games For Windows live from all their PC titles

The Games For Windows Live has been quite a curse to most PC gamers for a countless number of reasons. So when Microsoft announced they are shutting down the service on July 4th, 2014 most people were ecstatic that they’d never have to worry about the service appearing in future games. However there has been concern for what would happen to games that already use the service. It’s basically entirely up to the publishers and developers to release patches to remove GFWL integration from their games, something 2K recently did with BioShock 2

Thankfully it looks as though Capcom will be following suit with their games. A user on the Steam Community forms emailed Capcom support about the status of Capcom’s games like Resident Evil 5 and Dead Rising 2. Below is the response from Capcom;

Hello,

Thanks for contacting Capcom!

As GFWL will be closing down, the client will be removed from games and you will still be able to play your games.

Unfortunately we do not have any details yet of how this will be done and when.

Regards,

There are still many unanswered questions obviously, but it’s good to hear Capcom is going to ensure people will still be able to play games like Resident Evil 5 without the service. Given Capcom’s support of Steamworks with games like Devil May Cry and Ultra Street Fighter 4–It’s a safe bet to assume they’ll be replacing GFWL with Steamworks.

Now that both 2K and Capcom have jumped off the GFWL bandwagon, one can only hope that the rest of the industry will continue this practice. (Please patch Dark Souls Namco Bandai)
