The most controversial Resident Evil title ever made. A title that has the fan base completely split down the middle regarding its authenticity. It’s no secret that this wasn’t developed by Capcom, but a British company called ‘M4’. With that in mind however, Shinji Mikami is credited within the game as advisor.

Indeed Capcom themselves don’t really seem to know the truth behind this title, many people have emailed them and many have received mixed responses. Some responses have said that the game is unofficial, and bares no effect on the series’ story. Other responses say the direct opposite.

Though fundamentals are in place, the game is very different from a traditional Resident Evil. The combat system for instance is totally different. Players run around through a top down perspective, and as soon as combat begins the game jumps to first person. Where a bar moves at the bottom of the screen from left to right. Players are required to hit the fire button when the bar highlights the enemy, and a dead centre shot results in a headshot. It takes a little getting used to, but strangely works on the Gameboy Color. This game is also the first to implement an armour system, which was going to make it’s first use in Resident Evil 1.5.

Dead Aim marks the latest in the survivor series. In Japan the game was known as ‘Biohazard: Gun Survivor 4 – Heroes Never Die’, but was changed to Resident Evil Dead Aim in Western regions as the previous Survivor games sold very badly.

The game itself has done moderately well, and is deserving of the praise it’s often labelled. Outside the combat system it’s a very traditional Resident Evil game, its third person. You go around hunting for keys and exploring rooms, whilst dodging creatures. Only when you initiate combat does the game go into a first person light gun shooting game, but thankfully – that aspect of the game works well this time.

It took a long time, and 4 games getting here. But Dead Aim really is getting there with what Capcom tried to do with Survivor all those years ago. The key here is the effort, the production values are high. It has good voice acting, superb FMV, decent graphics and the controls are intuitive and responsive, (controller and gun alike). The web domains for Dead Aim 2 and Dead Aim 3 have been bought by Capcom so we can only hope for more Dead Aim games in the future, though whether they will be direct sequels to this game, or separate chapters in the Resident Evil universe, remains to be seen.

The first rumor about an RE online game came up in 2000 (!) already. At that time it was planned that RE4 is this game. It got a bit quiet about it in the next two years and then Outbreak was revealed at E³ 2002.

At that time everyone knew that RE4 will be a solo game again and Capcom decided to create an extra series, titled RE Outbreak to bring the Resident Evil online experience to the fans.

The japanese release was in December 2003. Outbreak got good marks and it did sell very well for a game which’s main purpose is the online mode.

In March 2004, the US version hit the shelves. What about the PAL/european version you ask? It’s sheduled for a September 2004 (!) release, almost one year after the original release in Japan. And thats not all… It WILL NOT come with the online mode! European players won’t be able to play the game online. Capcom already announced a second chapter of Outbreak which will come fall 2004. So when japan gets the sequel, european players just started doing Outbreak 1, but only in offline mode…

And then they wonder why it does not sell well enough in Europe…

Release Dates: December 2003 (Japan) || March 2004 (US) || September 2004 (PAL/Europe)

Resident Evil: Survivor 2: CODE: Veronica – is perhaps the oddest game of the saga.
Its story line is based around that of CODE: Veronica, but aside from the characters, location and enemies – the game couldn’t be anymore different if it wanted to be. It was Capcom’s first attempted at bringing Resident Evil to the arcades, and early builds were titled: Resident Evil: Fire Zone.

Its structure is more like an arcade game too, with levels instead of a continuous story, and ‘bosses’ at the end of each. Points are awarded for quick completion times, damage taken, which weapons you used.etc.

The game did reasonably well worldwide and was released on the PlayStation 2 in Japan and Europe. The US missed this game as Capcom feared that releasing a light gun game in the wake of shootings in American high schools would be met with criticism.
It’s nonetheless an interesting title, but only really worth owning if you have to have every single Resident Evil available, but as it contains no additions to the overall storyline, and isn’t really all that playable, you wouldn’t be hated giving this one a miss.

Resident Evil: Gun Survivor 2 About is a post from: Rely on Horror

They surprised the fan base by indicating this was the first spin off Resident Evil title, and would infact be a light gun shooting game (no doubt cashing in on the success of Sega’s HOUSE OF THE DEAD).

The game was release just before Christmas 1999 to much resistance. Reviews ripped it apart and the game didn’t sell not nearly enough. Many blame the awful graphics – others the dire control system. Either way – this game was not a success, and it took Capcom nearly 4 years to get even close to perfecting the formula, which is evident in RESIDENT EVIL DEAD AIM.

Every true RE fan bought a Dreamcast only to play the upcoming RE game with finally NO pre-rendered backgrounds anymore.

About 6 or 7 months after RE C:V being released on Dreamcast, Capcom announced the production of a “complete” version of the game for the PlayStation 2. They added three new Wesker cut-scenes, and some minor adjustments to the game. The end sequence was really superior, most likely the best in any RE game yet. Fans were disappointed by Capcom. This only either to make money from a good game, or tweak some faults in the original. A GameCube release was announced later, near the release of the RE2 and RE3 ports. However, the port to the two alternative consoles made the game far more accessible to RE fans, and there are even slight differences between the GameCube and Playstation 2 port, for example codes, or the aftermath of the battle with Nosferatu.

Release Dates of CV Original: Japan: January 2000 || US: March 29th 2000 || PAL: June 2000

Well, it’s finally out. And what a post-Resident Evil game period it’s been. We all thought Survivor, Outbreak tore the fan base in half – but no more than this game. Its quality is undisputed. Disappointments the main fans may have with the game, it’s nonetheless simply a stunningly well made game.

I think the storyline is where most people level the problems, other the actual meaning of what survival horror is, but more than that it’s clear it has been an absolute success. The game has received rave reviews all over the internet. Sadly though, the sales haven’t been as impressive as Capcom though, with the Japanese release not selling anywhere near as much as Capcom had hoped…

You can perhaps level this at the poor timing of the announcement of the PS2 release, which has had Nintendo no doubt turning in hatred toward Capcom. Had no-one known of the PS2 release prior to release, it may of convinced PS2 owners to part with the cash for the Gamecube. With the knowledge it’s coming to the PS2, they held on and simply have to wait longer. A shame…

Still, the game is out now. After the 5+ years of waiting, it’s been a disappointment, it’s been an improvement, and it’s been controversial. But on top of it all, and perhaps what Capcom wanted out of us at the expense of the story, it’s been recognized as a damn good game.

In Fall 2005 the PS2 version of Resident Evil 4 was released in all territories. It contained some notable extras like a whole new scenario about Ada’s mission that adds about 5 more hours of gameplay. Also new weapons have been added and some extra costumes. The PS2 version was ported pretty well and should be a mega seller aswell. Money rules the world.

After the PS 2 port, SourceNext developed a port of RE 4 for PC. This port mantained all the extras of the PS2 port, including other like an Easy difficulty, that enabled a shotgun since the beggining, widescreen resolutions and a second set of unlockable costumes for Leon and Ashley. The ratings were poor because of the lack of mouse support and frustating keyboard controls (which was latter fixed by an unnoficiail patch), and also the lack of high quality FMVs and inferior graphics from it’s console counterpart (fixed with the official v1.10 patch). Though, the PC version had good reviews from 7.5 to 8.

Short time after the PC release, a Wii edition was released. This version had all the extras from the PS2 version with NGC graphics, has a new control scheme that allowed aiming with the Wiimote via a reticle on-screen and knifing with Wiimote motion, and also retained the past control scheme by allowing the game to be played with laser sight with a NGC or Classic Controller. Many sites reviewed this version as the best of all, giving it ratings of 9.5 to perfect 10, and some complained about the lack of more exclusives.

Since then, RE 4 has also been ported to iPhone OS, Celphones and the brasilian console Zeebo.

The prequel to Resident Evil 2 was released in 1999. RE2 again was a huge success, so it was just sure for Capcom to move on with the series.

Capcom decided to place RE3 before the events of RE2 (at the beginning) and after the events of RE2 (the end). Confusing? Not really. Its just another game that plays during the mess in Raccoon City. You could say RE2 and RE3 almost playing at the same time but at different locations.

RE3 didn’t really fullfill the expectations most RE fans had with this title. The gameplay was the same as in previous titles. It still had pre-rendered backgrounds, in improved quality of course, but still the same technology. Ok, we couldn’t expect a technology flip, but RE3 just felt like RE2 most of the time. Many people though say it is the best game in the series, but also the last title that can be done with this technology and on PlayStation.

RE3 was ported over to alot of other platforms like PC, Dreamcast and finally GameCube without giving it any big modification with each port.

After the huge success of the first Resident Evil, Capcom of course had to do another one. The original Resident Evil was one of the best selling games on the PlayStation ever, so it would have been dumb of Capcom to not create a huge franchise of this title.

About one year after the release of RE, Capcom showed first preview videos of the sequel. You could see Elza Walker and Leon S. Kennedy as the main characters. Later on it was told that they cancelled the game, because it was too much like the original RE. The designer who was responsible for it left and so we got RE2 like we have it on our shelves now.

Two years after the first RE, Capcom released Resident Evil 2 on January 21st 1998.

The only questions was if the sequel could live up to Resident Evil. The answer was yes and it also was a million-seller all over the world.
