[April Fools’] Telltale Games Announces New Five Nights at Freddy’s Series

Today TellTale Games has announced that they’re going to fully embrace the horror genre with their next episodic game, Five Night at Freddy’s.

Based on the hit series of games released between the span of a year by sole developer Scott Cawthon, Five Nights at Freddy’s is going to get the Telltale Games treatment, expanding on the deep lore of the main series in their signature adventure game style. TellTales’s Five Nights at Freddy’s will go back to the beginning where it all began, uncovering the origins of the animatronic ghouls that plague the Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza establishment.

“We’ve worked on some incredible IPs over the years, from The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Minecraft, and BorderlandsFive Nights at Freddy’s was the next logical step,” said a TellTale Games representative. “The Freddy games strike fear in the hearts of the young and old, and have a level of pathos not found in other titles, ours included.”

Interestingly, developer Scott Cawthon will not be involved in the project beyond extending the rights of the series to TellTale. The press release states that they’re actually working with top game theorists on the story, which will be doled out over the course of five episodes throughout 2016.

“Scott is great and all, but he doesn’t get the complexities of the FNAF mythos,” said TellTale. “We’re working alongside the true fans of the series, who are deeply invested in the timeline, character motivations and their subtle nuances. Together we’re going to craft something truly terrifying.”

In true TellTale fashion, Five Nights at Freddy’s will have a branching narrative based on the player’s actions and decisions, affecting the course of events and whether or not they live or die. Each episode will take place over the course of one night, and depending on how the player reacts to the approaching animatronic creatures, the story could continue or end entirely through permadeath, locking out play of future episodes. The game will include some tough decisions, such as deciding between watching the security feed of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza or shutting the security room’s door.

TellTale’s Five Nights at Freddy’s – Episode 1: Hawaiian Style will release on May 3 as a Windows 10 exclusive on the Windows Store.

Update: The release date for TellTale’s Five Nights at Freddy’s – Episode 1: Hawaiian Style has actually been moved up seconds after announcement to tomorrow, April 2.
