Silicon Valley Stars Play Dark Souls 3

Comedians and Silicon Valley stars TJ Miller and Kumail Nanjiani have played Dark Souls 3 in a video, courtesy of Namco Bandai. The two are accompanied by Namco Bandai Community Manager J. Kartje as they attempt to understand just what they’re meant to do, and whether or not games truly even matter in the grand scheme of things.

The two are led through the early parts of the game, taking turns dying and laughing at the series’ signature “fuck you” gameplay moments. The video leans a little heavy on using geek cred to promote the game, but Kumail’s following quote makes it all worth it as it’s wonderfully poignant amidst continuous internet controversies over things like “CENSORSHIP” and whether or not games are being “politicized” because multiple demographics are being represented.

“Hi, I’m Kumail Nanjiani from Silicon Valley, and we’re gonna play Dark Souls. I don’t take games seriously. My self respect and self esteem does not depend on video games. I don’t get obsessed, and watch me not get obsessed,” Kumail stated.

The fact that this quote appears in a piece of marketing for the next big gaming release of the year means it’ll reach a few ears that need to hear it. That’s beautiful.
