Modders unlock on-disc DLC in Resident Evil 6 (Update: Capcom’s response)
Update: Eurogamer got in touch with a Capcom spokesperson to get the skinny behind this on-disc DLC matter. ”We still have unannounced DLC for RE6 that will be revealed in the coming months and while virtually all such content will not be on the disc there will be one piece of content, that for technical reasons, requires the use of a combination of newly downloaded data and data that is included on the retail game disc,” said the spokesperson to Eurogamer.
Original: Modders and Capcom do not get along at all. Capcom, known for their extensive on-disc DLC “strategy”, have come under fire for stuffing locked content into their games that people need to pay to unlock.
Modders have now brought their unlocking efforts to the recently released Resident Evil 6. Within the contents of the disc they found Mercenaries costume color variants, Mercenaries retro costumes, a Hunk-like Mercenaries character, and a new No Hope difficulty setting for campaign. The modders were able to extract and use these files on an Xbox 360 copy of the game.
Now, before we all go up in arms at Capcom for not letting a bad habit die, we have to consider ResidentEvil.net. Capcom’s online Resident Evil stat website allows for users to link their accounts in order to have a growing profile, with experience points (RE Points) that can unlock DLC and other Resident Evil 6 themed goodies. Currently, the retro costumes, Hunk-maybe, and the No Hope difficulty are not on the website.
I’m going to give Capcom the benefit of the doubt and presume that all of this on-disc DLC will essentially be free, as long as we play the game enough and redeem our RE Points on ResidentEvil.net. At least that’s what I hope. I find myself enjoying Mercenaries a whole lot and some free content would certainly make it a better experience. Here’s hoping we expect the content soon and maybe a free map or two.
The content can be seen in the videos below and at Original-Gamers. Beware of spoilers.
