Metal Gear Survive is Fortnite Meets State of Decay

Metal Gear Survive

The scamps over at Konami have released a new gameplay trailer for the already-contentious Metal Gear Survive. The new footage details the basic premise of the singleplayer campaign, which is once again stressed as a spin-off timeline that’s not canon to the rest of the Metal Gear series. We also get an extensive look at what players will be doing in the alternate dimension where the game takes place. It doesn’t look half bad.

Metal Gear Survive, as strange as it may be for existing, up the survival elements far more than Metal Gear Solid V did. Players will have to scavenge for resources, feed themselves, farm, and fortify their defense to secure what they’ve accumulated so far, including survivors. If you were a fan of the Motherbase management in MGSV, Survive expands upon that for a base camp that is under threat from real-time enemy assaults in the form of the the Wanderers — crystal zombies … or something.

Elements from other survival and crafting games like Fortnite and State of Decay are on display here, and that’s not a bad thing. Combining those gameplay systems with the solid foundation MGSV built could lead to a pretty good game, especially with friends. Now, whether or not you want to support that game due to Konami’s less-than-kosher behavior regarding Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima’s departure from the publisher, is up to you.

Metal Gear Survive releases February 20, 2018 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. A beta for the game will be available from January 18 – 21 on consoles only.
