Is the Bioshock movie still in the works?
Remember a while ago we first learned that Hollywood was planning to adapt, butcher, yet another videogame franchise? And that franchise was to be Bioshock, the underwater epic that received high praise upon release and is still regarded as one of the gems this gen. Can a movie actually live up to such acknowledgment? Judging by previous efforts by Hollywood to adapt video games to the big screen, probably not. Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski was tagged as the projects director, but since that revelation we’ve been kept in the dark.
Now we know that Mr. Verbinski, due to other projects on his plate, has downgraded to the role of a producer with Juan Carlos Fresnadillo now serving as a director (of 28 weeks later fame). But this is all part of the primal stages of a film, the question is, will this project completely sprout? Ken Levine, the Bioshock creator, seems to not want to confirm the film’s eventual release across theatres, but he does state that him and his brain trust are actively working on the project. What this alludes to is probably the scripting process and basic conceptualization of the plot and how to convert Jack, a seemingly hollow character, into a full fledged bad ass…Just kidding about the bad-ass, but Levine did state there a “super, super challenge” in making him into a three-dimensional character for movie-goers.
There is one shed of hope towards this being a successful adaptation though. In that comes in the director’s intentions to make this a ‘Hard-R’ and not settle for the PG-13 crowd. Kudos to you sir. More info on this project as it surfaces from the depths of Rapture.
