Gabriel’s Fate In ‘Castlevania: Lords of Shadow’ Was Always Planned

Early on in its development, Lords of Shadow seemed like a brand new IP from Konami, sharing a minimal amount of similarities to Castlevania. Then, the Castlevania title was added to the game and some fans were still left with the impression that this was done so that this original IP would have a familiar, and established, title to rely on.

Even after its launch, some people are still debating Lords of Shadow’s stance within the Castlevania franchise. For as much people that cherish the game and its overall experience, there are almost as many who dismiss it as just another action title masquerading as an entry in the classic franchise (a misguided notion).

So, this brings us to Lords of Shadow’s highly memorable epilogue sequence, which showcased Gabriel taking on the role of the Prince of Darkness. This may have seemed as being abrupt to some and a bit out of place, but upon further comprehension of the overall plot and its many implications throughout the game, one should come to the conclusion that Gabriel’s transformation into Dracula does in fact make sense.

Now, to further provide proof to this notion comes the following response from the producer of Lords of Shadow, David Cox when questioned over this very matter by a fan via twitter: “It was decided at the very beginning.” What do you guys think? How did you, personally, feel about the ending and Gabriel’s fate?

I was fine with the ending, even enjoy it this way as long as Resurrection explains it well enough. PSN is back up and store should be next couple weeks, Cox won’t be able to use that as his scapegoat for it not being released.

    Interesting times ahead.

Unfortunate path for a great hero.

The ending of LOS was telegraphed and I have no knowledge of the former goings on with Konami, but it was a fairly obvious outcome. If we get to explore Gabrielle’s alter/evil ego, then I am in full anticipation!

I loved it, and it made sense to me according to the timeline. Since the game acknowledged the events in Lament of Innocence, and the events in Lords of Shadow were WAY before the reign of Vlad Tepes, this could fit in well. Maybe Gabriel had to change his name? It’s a good opportunity to mold together the original mythology AND Castlevania mythology.

I felt the story line was good (even if I wanted to see Gabe really break down), and the ending was fantastic. To be honest, I half-expected Gabe to be Dracula in the end anyways, due to the lack of a really good developed antagonist. I’m looking forward to the next DLC to kick-ass, story wise, as lots of things need explaining!
