F2P Dead Island: Epidemic now on Steam Early Access, for a price

Dead Island: Epidemic, the odd MOBA spinoff of the Dead Island series is now on Steam Early Access. The “free-to-play” MOBA game is currently in a closed beta state, with those who want to help support development being able to pay $16.99 on Steam for immediate access. Paying for entry to a F2P game that’s in an incomplete state is fairly questionable, but the product page states that the listing is for those who want to provide feedback during the game’s development. I’m sure there are a lot of things to say about paying to be a beta tester, but I’ll save that for another day, perhaps when I get my hands on the game itself.

Those who purchase entry into the beta of Dead Island: Epidemic get exclusive items, characters, and stat boosters. The second purchasable pack, “DEADicated”, is being sold for $39.99 and provides everything in the previous pack with additional content in the form of more weapons, character points, and a playable Sam B: the rapper character from the mainline Dead Island games. The pack entitled “Contagion” nets buyers all bonuses from DEADicated and three additional copies of the game to share.

I’m not sure how many people out there are clamoring to support a MOBA spinoff to a zombie series that has received lukewarm reception from critics, but Deep Silver seems confident in Epidemic. If you’re one such person hoping to fund and influence development for this game, then I guess you now have your chance.
