E3 2017: Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus Offers Catharsis Through Nazi-Slaying

Bethesda has released another trailer for the highly anticipated Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, this time focusing on action rather than story or characters. Several developers from MachineGames narrate the action, and while the gameplay footage comes fast and furious, the trailer does a good job of explaining some of the key gameplay differences between The New Order and The New Colossus.

Stealth gameplay makes a return, and there is a much wider range of gameplay approaches players can take with an expanded arsenal that now includes scoped weapons. Dual-wielding also returns, though this time is not limited to two guns of the same type; players can mix and match to their heart’s content. B.J.’s arsenal also includes a hatchet which can be used for both close and long range kills based on the footage. New weapons including automatic shotguns and grenade launchers are also shown off, and if the trailer is anything to go by, MachineGames is not shying away from explicit anti-Nazi violence. Awesome.

Though the story isn’t the focus of the trailer, there are a few interesting glimpses into B.J.’s situation during the events of The New Colossus. Multiple times B.J. is shown shooting from a wheelchair, which could hint at him being unable to use his legs after the events of The New Order. We also see the same shot of the outside of a diner surrounded by Klansmen and Nazis, though this time in an explicitly first person perspective.
