Dead Space 3 microtransactions explained by EA

When I heard that Dead Space 3 would include microtransaction for buying weapons parts, I, like many, became annoyed. Within the weapon crafting menu of Dead Space 3 lies an option to buy missing parts with real money. This instantly enraged a lot of people because it felt obtrusive and greedy, on EA’s part. But, then I thought back–every Dead Space has had DLC that allowed players to improve their stats from the get go. Fire up Dead Space 1 or 2 and you’ll see some enhanced suits and weapons for sale. The only difference here seems to be how straightforward accessing that type of DLC has become.

Speaking with CVG, Dead Space 3 producer, John Calhoun had this to say regarding the microtransactins, “There’s a lot of players out there, especially players coming from mobile games, who are accustomed to micro-transactions. They’re like “I need this now, I want this now”. They need instant gratification. So we included that option in order to attract those players, so that if they’re 5000 Tungsten short of this upgrade, they can have it.

“So not only are the micro-transactions completely optional, but all packs are available to purchase using in-game resources that you find. So, your scavenger bot will go out, and sometimes when he comes back he’ll deliver ration seals. You’ll start to accumulate ration seals at a pretty steady clip throughout the game, and everything that can be purchased with real world dollars can also be purchased with ration seals.”

I can’t say that I’m upset about this. I’ve seen it already implemented into the previous entries in the series, but this time it’s just a bit more pronounced, yet still optional. Now, if resources are scarce so much so that it doesn’t feel completely option, then I’ll be peeved. Let’s hope that won’t be a nasty surprise once the game releases on February 5th.
