Whispers in The Dark Ep. 90: Layers of Inspiration

On this artistic episode of the Whispers in The Dark podcast, we talk about Layers of Fear. The first half of the podcast is a spoilercast where we talk about the sequence of events, symbolism, and our overall impressions of this new game in the survival horror genre. For the second half of the podcast we talk about Kojima Productions’ influence on the horror genre and P.T as an inspiration to indie devs, for better or worse. Alyson Road, Visage, and other inspired titles along with Layers of Fear are talked about. I might also discuss my desperate plan to get some VR coverage on this site (help us out Oculus and/or Valve!)

CJ on the subject of VR, I haven’t seen much mention of the Kitchen tech demo for PSVR from you guys, did you not have a chance to check it out? I know it’s all been kept very hush hush at the moment.

    • Sadly no. We even missed it the year we went to E3. I’d love to get some time with it.

I love how you’re starting to do more podcasts. Before there you were taking a long break from them.

The problem with a lot of these indie horror games and the ones that are inspired by P.T is they are just generic and P.T wasn’t even a game it was just a tech demo of what Silent Hills would of looked like. I never played P.T or a lot of indie horror games but a lot of them just seen uninspired and not original IMO.

I don’t care how many copies RE6 sold. Them re releasing RE6 again just shows they really don’t know what the fans want. Same with Umbrella Corps. They want to cater to both fan bases. The action RE games and the survival horror RE games.

Isn’t that okay tho? Especially if they’re seperate? Giving the horror fans their own stand-alone releases like the REmasters and Revelations, and giving the action fans games like Umbrella Corps? Instead of trying to force it all into one game like they did with 6? I’d rather them be seperate so I can just not buy one of them, instead of having to sift through the action to find nuggets of horror.

As a huge fan of this game, I feel like it’s worth mentioning that there is more than 1 ending to this game and the ‘loop’ ending that I heard talked about, is the most common ending people get, but it’s the game’s way of telling you that you’re not finished. The more you play this game, the more it changes. I noticed, my second and third time through, there were significant differences. New rooms and more disturbing sounds following you.
